Title

NMOSD patients have impaired quality of life due to physical and emotional limitations

Abstract

OBJECTIVE. To report quality of life in a cohort of people with Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD).
METHOD. We evaluated 22 patients in two reference centers over a period of 6 months. Inclusion criteria was diagnosis of NMOSD according to IPND 2015. Demograhic and clinical data were evaluated. To evaluate life quality we use the Brazilian version of life quality SF-36. The research is in progress and will be applied in several regions of Brazil.
RESULTS. 22 NMOSD patients in the states of São Paulo and Paraíba, with 72% of female preponderance were evaluated. Median age was 36 and Disease duration was 4.76 years.
According to the instrument, results are seen on a scale ranging from 0 to 100, where zero is the worst state and 100 is the best.
Results obtained: regarding the physical functioning domain, the mean value obtained was 54; regarding the role limitations due to physical health domain, the mean value obtained was 36; regarding the pain domain, the mean value obtained was 62; regarding the general health domain, the mean value obtained was 43; regarding the energy/fatigue domain, the mean value obtained was 40; regarding the social functioning domain, the mean value obtained was 47; regarding the role limitations due to emotional problems domain, the mean value obtained was 33; regarding the emotional well-being domain, the mean value obtained was 55.
CONCLUSION. In this research, it was demonstrated that role limitations due to physical health domain and role limitations due to emotional problems domain were more prominent for the reduction in the Quality of Life of people with NMOSD. Compared with national and international studies, NMOSD appears to have a negative impact on quality of life.
